April 11th - Container Selection / Tree Planning

How to balance the horticultural needs of the plant
with the aesthetics of the container and plant combination.
How to create a flexible design & care plan for a tree.
Discussion Points: what makes containers attractive;
which containers which what plants; what can you plan;
what do you need to be flexible about

April 18th - Repotting & Pruning Maples

Repotting techniques and the balance of horticultural
needs of maples at times of major pruning.
(builds on planning & container selection)
Discussion Points: which branches should stay, which
should go; should we change a planting angle?

April 25th - Wiring & Thinning Juniper

Wiring skills for minor and major bending. How to push
back growth on Shimpaku and Procumbens (nana).
(builds on planning)
Discussion Points: can you bend too much; could a
different viewing angle reduce our need for extreme
bending; pads or pom-poms - artistic and horticulture
balancing.

May 02th - Spring Pine Work

Branch thinning and wiring for Black, White, Red, and Mugo
pine. Improving your odds of getting backbudding and taming
leggy branches while balancing energy.
Discussion Points: should the species direct the style;
wild vs. refined appearance.

May 23rd - Group Plantings

Introduction to the variety in group plantings. Which
species lend themselves to which styles. Horticulture
needs of a group planting. Planning a forest.
Discussion Points: viewing the forest from within or as
a perspective; what elements make up a group planing;
dense canopy or thin or both?

May 30th - Class Forest

Group project to create a large Dawn Redwood forest based
on the plan created the previous week.
Discussion Points: adjusting the plan on-the-fly;
does the plan work as-is or what needs to change?
